We explore the dynamic relationship between circularity and retrovation in the apparel industry. This industry is often criticized for its impacts on local communities and the environment, which may occur at different stages and across various geographies within the production chain. Despite this, some companies are responding to such growing concerns. In this context, we investigate a fascinating trend: the resurgence of traditional production methods within innovative frameworks, known as retrovation. Our paper examines how this fusion of craftsmanship and innovation can drive transformative, circular changes in the industry.
Through a case study on Rifò, a business based in the Prato textile district in Italy, we showcase the revitalization of cenciaioli artisans, who have long been known for repurposing textile scraps and waste. We suggest these artisans are now at the forefront of sustainability innovation, blending their traditional knowledge with contemporary sustainability practices.
